Five minutes with ADA-award winning designer Veanne Chong

Since its founding in 2015, Luxe Interior has been well-known both locally and nationally as a leading interior design firm. Leading it is Veanne Chong, an award-winning interior designer who has created custom luxury homes and offices for clients all around the world.

One of her award-winning projects is a lavish, ultra-luxurious home in Mines Residence that was customized to accommodate her client’s desire to feel closer to the natural world. Situated in a posh neighbourhood, the 20,000-square-foot house boasts a picturesque view of the famed Mine Resort & Golf Club, which has been transformed from an empty plot of ground into a golf course. Another project that won her firm recognition was designing a luxury apartment in the center of Kuala Lumpur city. Large-cut Volakas marble with minimal joint lines were used to create a large sense of space that is enhanced by the continuous natural marble lines.

Founder of Luxe Interior, Veanne Chong has made a name for herself as a designer at home and internationally.

Chong obtained a professional degree from the University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia, and a Diploma in Business Management-TAFE from Inti International College in Penang.

FirstClasse: How would you describe your design philosophy? 
Veanne Chong: My philosophy revolves around harmonizing the art of design with practicality. We craft projects based on the client’s personality and emotions, ensuring that the resulting space or home seamlessly integrates with their lifestyle while also providing an aesthetic satisfaction.

Tell us about your first design project – what defined your style then? 
I fondly recall my initial project, involving a family of four, which resonated deeply with my own family experiences. Collaborating with the client was a delightful journey, from understanding their lifestyle and living habits to exploring their hobbies. Together, we meticulously planned every aspect of the project, making decisions ranging from design concepts and space planning, to selecting materials and furnishings.  

Over the years, through dedicated practice, patience, and a meticulous attention to detail, I have refined my design approach, specializing in high-end residential projects that seamlessly blend with contemporary elegance or a modern classic design style.

Tell us about your most recent project – how has your style changed since? 
One of the most exciting projects I recently handled was a 13,000sf double storey penthouse located right next to the KLCC Twin Towers. Our journey through the entire project involved overcoming challenges and making strategic decisions to ensure every detail aligned with the client’s vision. The collaboration effort with teams of engineers and specialist extended beyond the selection of furniture, lighting fixtures, and accessories, delving into the intricacies of spatial design and functionality.  

Witnessing the penthouse gradually transform into a masterpiece of luxury was a testament to our collective dedication. The process became an ardent labour of love, where every element told a unique story.

Where do you derive most of your inspiration?
I love traveling. It allows me to experience different cultures, architectural styles, and design trends from around the world. Travelling helps me broaden my perspective and influences my work. It opens a designer to diverse colour schemes, materials and spatial arrangement.

What do you do when you’re feeling little stuck with inspiration? 
When I’m feeling a little stuck with inspiration, instead of forcing my mind to continue with unproductive work, I would prefer to set it aside and go for a short trip. Besides taking a break to free up my mind, very often I can open myself to new perspectives and experiences, so when I get back, I can approach the project from a completely different angle.
